Hi, I'm Don from 1A Auto. I hope this how-to video helps you out, and next time you need parts for your vehicle, think of 1AAuto.com. Thanks.
In this video, we are going to show you how to replace the outer taillight assembly on this 1998 Honda Civic and it's the same part and process on the Civics from '96 to '98 and we'll show you on the passenger side, but the driver side it's the same process and the only items you'll need are a new outer taillight assembly from 1AAuto.com and an 8mm socket and ratchet with an extension.
First we are going to show you how to replace the bulbs. Just push in the center of this clip, pry it out, and then pull back your insulation. Now, you just twist the socket out and then the bulb pull straight out, push the new one in, and place the socket back into place. For the bulb above it, do the same thing. Just twist the socket out, pull the bulb right out and push the new one in and twist it back into place. If you need to replace the bulbs on the other side, it's the exact same process. When you are done, fold the insulation back up into place, tuck it in under that plastic panel and replace your clip, and to replace it just pull out the center, push the clip into place and push the center in to lock it.
Now we are going to show you how to replace the assembly. Start off by just pushing in the center of this clip and prying it out and then pull back the insulation and then you want to remove these four 8mm nuts. Once these are removed, your taillight will pull right out and you can just disconnect the harness by pushing on the tab and just pulling it apart.
See the old part on the left, and the new part from 1A Auto on the right. You can see they are identical and they'll mount exactly the same. Now twist out the sockets on your old taillight and twist them into your new taillight. Reconnect the harness and push the new taillight into place and then replace those four 8mm nuts and just put your insulation back in place, tuck it under that plastic panel and just replace your clip.
