In this video, we'll be replacing a power window motor on this 2004 GMC Sierra. It's basically the same as any '99 to '06 Sierra and Silverado, Yukon, Escalade, all those trucks and SUVs. For this project, you'll need a medium flat blade screwdriver, a pair of needle nose pliers, 7mm socket and driver, a Torx driver small size (number 2), and a 10mm socket and driver.
For this, due to the YouTube 10-minute limit, we're going to speed up a lot of our stuff. First, it is the door panel. I'm going to go through that really quick for you. Pry out the door lock button. You remove the mirror panel and there are just two clips. You just use a screwdriver. I covered it in a rag so I wouldn't scratch the paint. Then the door handle trim plate. I just pry this out from the back, it comes off like that. Then, there's a small push pin, basically a plastic push pin. Start it with a screwdriver and then I use pliers to pull it out the rest of the way. There's a little tiny trim plate. Pull it off with your finger. Number two Torx screw, remove that quick.
I move real fast in this video. There's two other bolts, one right behind the lock right there. That's a 7 mm; remove that. And then another 7mm up under the door pull. Right there. Once those are removed, then the door panel basically lifts up and out, and then you're going to need to reach in behind, that's the courtesy light that I unplug there and then you need to unplug the power window switch and locks and everything. Actually it's also the mirror that plugs in there. This one is a little difficult. It's got a little lock tab and then that little grey lever actually pivots forward, so close up a bit and it comes out. You see me struggle here a little bit. Unplug it. There's one more on that master switch, and then unplug your speaker.
Once the door panel is removed, now we remove the door handle. Pry that blue clip away and then use your fingers to rod then pulls up and out. 10mm bolt, take that off and then the handle slides forward and off. Now, you want to carefully remove your water shield. This keeps water from getting into your truck so carefully remove it and then put it aside so it doesn't get damaged.
Then remove the handle or the switch plate. Take off a seven millimeter bolt on the backside and then pry it up and out from the back to front, like that. Obviously, if your window regulators messed up, you're not going to be able to control it. I'm doing this on a working truck so you can just see how everything comes apart. If your window regulator is broken, hopefully it's in the up position because that's the ideal position. You can see here, I'm going to run the window up and then I'll show you the two bolts that clamp the window into place from the window regulator; right there and right there. If your regulator's not working, then loosen these 10 millimeter bolts up. Pull the window apart and secure them in the up position with some tape. You'll see that later.
The window regulator is held in by six bolts. I just showed you three there: one, two, and three down there so six total. You can see, I'm securing the window in the up position, two pieces of tape, four might be better. Now I'm removing the six bolts that hold the window regulator. Quickly, working quick. You can see my father over there, working on one of his projects. He's in the plaid shirt, old school. I think he was putting the radio into a '74.
Now I'm running the window regulator down a little bit and it's released from the window now. Now I'm just taking the rest of the bolts off. Then, once you have all the bolts out you just twist the regulator, I'll slow it back down here. First unplug, obviously, the window motor, the little walking tab, and then pull it apart. Then you just twist the regulator down and around. Like I said, you'll want to remove your window from the clamps and get it in the up position and tape, so you have the room to maneuver this stuff.
Then you can see it's basically two rails with cables. Then once you've got it out then you can put your new one in. It looks like I skipped a little stuff there, but the new one goes in and then it hangs from up there. You can see right there, it hangs on there. Then you start a bolt and a cop and you hang up the back. The same thing, it has a little tooth that hangs up there. Start the bolts and then we'll speed up the tape here. All six bolts.
Again, look at those hands work. I'm quick. Then, when you take these, you can see I'm just using a screwdriver style driver. That's sufficient as long as you get them you always want to install them all first. You don't want to put one in and tighten it up. You want to put one in, screw it on for a few threads and then put the rest of them in too. Then go back and tighten them up afterwards. Putting them in one at a time allows you to move things around a little bit. Make sure you can get everything in.
Now I'm testing the regulator. Before I test it, obviously, you've got to plug it in. Just run it up.
Actually, I'm not testing it. I'm running it up into the window making sure that the clip clamps go onto the window okay. Running it right up and then I'll tighten up those clamps.
Now it's fastened to the window. Pull the tape off of the top and now I'll give the window a quick test. You can see it goes down and up. Make sure everything's free. Make sure the window motor is not laboring at all. Just make sure it runs the exact same way as your other side. That's about it. I hope this helps you out. Make sure our window is all the way up. Okay. So, what we need to do first is remove our door panel. Grab yourself a nice plastic trim tool. Come right up along here, or even up here and just try to pry this away. You're going to see it's got a couple of little clippy-dos. We're going to move along to this right here. Come down along here with your trim tool, pry up on all this. Disconnect all of your wiring. Just going to use the smallest pocket screwdriver. If you press right here, there's a little piton, and then you can pull this down and remove this as well. Let's get this trim piece off of here as well. Now, if you look right up onto your handle, you're going to see a bolt that's right there. You can either use a 9/32 or even a 7-millimeter socket, whichever you have. Next, we're going to get this little door lock bezel out of the way. I'm just going to use my small pocket screwdriver just to kind of get this started, and I'll use my trim tool. Pop it right off. That exposes our screw. Get this out of here as well. Now we're going to remove this little cap right there. You can use anything, a small pocket screwdriver, whatever you've got. Pops right off. Underneath there, you're going to see a T20. Remove this screw. There it is. On the far end, we'll go ahead and remove this push clip as well.
So, now if you feel along the bottom, you're going to find this bolt right here. Once again, either use a 7-millimeter or 9/32. Get that out of there. Go ahead and grab onto your door panel, lift it straight up, and draw it away from your vehicle. Just use your small pocket screwdriver. Come right underneath this area right there, and you should be able to draw the wire out. There we go. The next thing we need to do is get behind this vapor barrier here. You can do this without removing your handle, but for me, it's much easier just to get the handle off and out of the way that way there, I can peel this right back and have a nice clear view. I'm going to take my small pocket screwdriver. I'm going to pry on this little clip and move it away from the rod. Once I've done that, I can lift up, and now it's unattached. Use your 10-millimeter socket, remove this bolt. Now we'll just go ahead and grab onto that handle, slide it forward and get it out of the way. Grab your vapor barrier. You want to be very careful not to tear this because it's fairly important, okay? So just do the best you can to get it all apart without tearing it. The next thing we need to do is make sure that our window can not fall down once we get our window regulator out. The best way to do that is to use some form of tape as I found. So I'm just going to go ahead and use this tape and I'm going to make some nice long strips. Tape is much cheaper than glass, so I'm really not too worried about using too much tape. Now, if you were to look in this square hole right here, you can see the bolt that holds your window to the window regulator. If you were to follow straight across towards the front of the vehicle, you'll find another one that looks exactly the same. Remove both of those. There's the bolt. Do the same to the other one. Next, we're going to take our small pocket screwdriver and we're going to remove this right here. If you were to press on this gray area, you should be able to draw this straight down.
Next, we're going to remove our mounting bolts. You're going to see three over here, and then if you were to follow your way over here, you'll find one there, one here, and one located down at the bottom. Let's remove them all. For your last one, I like to hold onto the motor here so it just can't fall over, and remove that bolt. You're going to notice you have a little hooky-do here. If you were to lift up on this, it should pop right out of there. Now I'm going to lay this down, do the same for this side. Lift up because there's a little hooky-do. Pop it out of its spot. Lay it down and now carefully remove it all. There it is, friends. Time to get our new window regulator installed. If you were to look at it, you're going to find those two little hooky-dos. Don't forget those go right up top. The side with the motor is going to go towards the front of the vehicle. Okay. I'm feeling around to find my hooky-do. I'm going to set it up into where it's supposed to go right there. That lines up my bolt hole. I'll do the same to the other side. Feel for my hook. There it is. Now we're going to start in all six of our screws before we tighten any of them down. Awesome. Okay. Let's get this connected in. Should click right in. Give it a nice tug. Make sure it's secure.
Go ahead and tuck that into the door. If you wanted to use a wire tie to hold it to this, it's probably a great idea. So that's what I'm going to do. Now on the new regulator, it's important to make sure you loosen up these bolts before we bring this up to the window. Nice and loose. I can open this right up. Now it's going to be time to get our window switch on here real quick because we need to bring this window regulator up and down. If you were to look at the back, you can see that there's writing. It tells you where all these go in. So I'll just go ahead and connect them into their corresponding holes. Make sure you flip over that gray piece right there. I'm just going to put this one in just because. Put the key in the on position. We're going to bring the window regulator down so that this bolt right there is right down here so we can get to it. And now after we loosen that up, we'll bring it all the way up so we can tighten it up. Let's bring this down. Don't go too far. Okay. I can see my bolt. I'm going to loosen this up so it's the same as the other side. Reach in there and make sure I separate it. Perfect.
Now we're just going to bring this up so we can see the clamshells going right up over that glass. Okay. It's completely bottomed out at this point. So assume that this is the glass right here and this is the piece. Bring it all the way so it's 100% matched up. Now we're going to put the bolts right through and tighten them up. Make sure it's nice and tight. So now I'm just going to grab the tape off of here. I'm going to leave it hanging right there just in case I have to reuse it for any reason. Everything should be good, but why waste it? Grab that window, down, up. As you can tell, it's going up and down on the tracks perfectly. This looks good. Let's go ahead and get the switch back off of here. At this point, we can bring this right back over. Make sure you grab your wires. We've got our little holes here. Make sure you put your wire through that as well. Let's get this rod through this little slot right here. Pull our wire. There we go. Make sure you stick this on. Now, looking at inside door handle, we can see we have a little hooky-dos. We're going to put this on, slide it in, and then, of course, we'll put in our bolt. Grab this, line those up. Slides right in. Put the rod in there. Make sure it's locked. Okay. Put on the screw. Go ahead and tighten it right up. Let's get this light reconnected. Slides right in.
Coming up here, we want to make sure we grab all this wiring, pull it right through like this. Now we've got our handle. It's going to come right through this hole. Now, as we push in the panel, you're going to see you have hooky-dos all coming down along here. You have one here, there, there, and then a couple along the bottom. All those need to fit into their slots that are on the door. Once you have them so they're starting in there, we'll slide them all down. Put our screws in here. Get this one right here. Nice and short. Right there. The long one goes right underneath this handle. Tight. Get this one. Put it right back in there. Get our little cover, push that right on there. Get our push clip.
Now it's time to put back on our lock. Make sure you've got the red area facing towards the rear of the vehicle. If you were to look at the backside, you're going to see there's a hooky-do here, and then there's a couple of little ones right there. This forward end needs to go in first, and then you roll the backside in. There it is. Make sure it's unlocked, of course. Now it's time to get this back on there. If you were to look at this, you're going to see there's a little hooky-do. That needs to slide in there. So, we'll just go right over the handle, put in that forward side first with the hooky-do, and then go ahead and clip this in. Perfect. Put this back on there, get another hooky-do, goes down, and then, of course, the pitons push right in. Let's get this back reconnected now. If you look at the backside, you can see, of course, the colors. Black, we're going to skip one and go blue. We'll take that green. Take the big one, slide it right in. Make sure it's locked in. Grab this, put it on. Now when you put this in, there should be like a little hooky-do here that's going to go under there, and then there should be a little clip that's going to force down in there. Both of ours are broken, so you're just going to have to imagine I'm going in from the front, sliding it down, making sure my wiring is where it needs to be. There we are.

Before you start this job, make sure the window is up and it's always a good idea to leave a passenger window down so you don't lock the keys in the car. Take this panel off. I'm just gonna use a trim tool. Let's get behind here, pry it out, and then up there's a little clip right there, those two little pins. Take this cover off next. Just get under here and there's some clips. There should be a clip right there. It looks like it broke before, and then this slides out. Take this little cover off. You could use either this trim tool or even a small screwdriver. Now take the trim tool, get under here, and just push it out a little bit. Pry it and then it's going to slide towards the back. There's a pin right there, two little clips right there. And just use a trim tool to get under here and just pry this out. It's just a push pin just like that. Now we're going to take these two bolts out, just move this lock rod to the back. There's a bolt right here and a bolt right here. Use a seven-millimeter socket. Take that bolt out and this one. The lower one is the longer one, take this bolt out. Use a T-20 socket. Now just grab the door panel and you want to slide up and then come out slightly. You don't want to break any of those clips and it's going to be hard to see, but you have to reach to grab the wires, disconnect the wires for the window switch. And over here, push down. This is like a ratchet retainer. While this is in there, there's a little button right there you push and then you ratchet this down and that disconnects that and one more connector and these all have push pins or push retainers, push locks. Just push all those down. Over here, just pull this light socket out, just pull it towards the vehicle and carefully. There's a bulb right there, and pull the door panel off.
I'm going to tape up the window so that it doesn't fall. You should use some masking tape. Now I'm going to take this vapor barrier off here. Just slide it off. To get this off a little bit more, I am going to take this door handle off, use a pick, just pop that off. Pop that rod out. Take a 10-millimeter socket, remove this bolt right here, and then grab the latch, slide it towards the inside of the car. It's just clipped in. Now I can just pull this vapor barrier off, just pull it out of the way, get the light socket through this hole. And you don't have to take it off completely, just get it out of your way enough so you can access some of these bolts. Now I want to pull these two bolts out. There's one right here, this is holding the regulator to the glass. Also over here. Pull that bolt out. You don't have to pull it out completely, just loosen it up enough so that the glass is separated from the regulator. Use a 10-millimeter socket and just loosen it up pretty good and then the same on the other one. At this point, what we can do is hook the window switch back up to the connectors, turn the key on, lower the window regulator, that should separate that from the glass. Okay. With all those connected and the key is on, I'm just going to lower this down. You can see that lowered down there, it lowered on the front side as well. Now I can turn the key off, disconnect this connector to the window harness, to the window switch. Now at this point, we have to disconnect all these bolts. This bolt-down here, this one here. So three on this side. So on this side, you have this bolt right here, this one here and this one. Three on this side as well. Let's disconnect the connector for the motor. Pop that down. Use a 10-millimeter socket to take all these bolts out. Now just grab the regulator. You just want to slide it up just slightly. Now we're going to twist it. Twist the front side like this. Slide it up. Twist the backside the other way. Slide it out.
Now take the new window regulator, just slide it in the same way it came out. This part goes in first, and the part with the motor on it goes on this side. There's these little tabs that'll hold this in place, there's a little tab right there that'll hold that in place. That's good. Now put the bolts back in. Now let's tighten those all up. That's good. Now I'm going to connect the electrical connector. Now, this new motor just has the connector on a wire. It's still the same. Just plug it in, lock it in place. Now I'm going to have to hook up the window switch to raise these brackets that hold the window on and it seems like they're a little bit tight. I'm going to have to loosen the bracket up a little. So I'm going to raise this up a little, loosen up the bolt on the bracket and then put it all the way up. All right. Turn the key on and just raise this up a little. All right, I can loosen this one up here. To get that one, I'm going to have to lower that one a little bit. Just use a 10-millimeter socket, loosen that up a little bit and it goes down a little right there and just loosen this bolt as well. This is exactly how I did the other one. Loosen that up and just spread the bracket just like that. And now we're going to raise it and make sure it goes on the window. Just go slow. Now it looks good there. Just check the other side, make sure that looks good as well. That looks good. Raise it up all the way. Looks good. Shut the key off and tighten these up and do the same on this one, and we can torque these to nine foot-pounds. Take the tape off. And at this point, we can turn the key on and just test it out, make sure everything works good. Looks good. Disconnect the connector again for the window switch and take the vapor barrier. Make sure you feed the wires through. This rod has to go through as well and also the light just like that. And you can use some butyl tape to tape this back on if it's falling off or some type of adhesive and put the inside door handle back on, slide it in position. Put the rod through, lock it in place and get the bolt, line the bolt up, tighten it down, and snug it up. And connect the connectors. That's good.
Take this light, slide that back in position. That's good. All right. Line the door panel back up and you actually have to move this lock rod towards the outside of the door. With that all lined up, then you can push it down. Just make sure it's in all the way around. Put them screws back in. Get that started, tighten it up. And put the screw that goes right there. This is a smaller one. Get that one started and I'll get this longer one started. And tighten these up and push this push pin right back there. This cover is gonna go over here. Pop that back on. Pop this cover on, slide it over the handle. Put the front end first, down and push it in. This lock is gonna go, you have to move the locker out again, move it to the unlock. Slide this front end first, lock it in place, make sure it works. And this last piece of trim here, line it up, lock it in place.
