A Brief History of Yugo
Yugo lasted seven years in the US market, and, despite leaving the US, the Yugo 45 existed for almost 30 years in other countries, only to end production in 2008.
Yugo was brought to the US by Malcolm Bricklin, who also formed Subaru of America in 1968. His recently-formed International Automobile Imports (IAI) bought the rights to sell the Yugo 45 in the US, and the affordable car sold quickly. Known as the Yugo GV, it came as the only model available but with many variations. The GV, meaning "Grand Value," was really a Fiat 127.
The GVC, GVL, and GVS all offered minor differences, mainly in trim and upholstery. The GVX "sport "version allowed drivers to hit 90 with its 1300cc, 55 horsepower engine.
During its tenure, the Yugo never upgraded its models features. When it tried to switch over to a fuel injection system. The EPA coincidentally tightened its emissions standards, thus thwarting any progress. The company later filed for bankruptcy in 1992.
Despite its short life, there are still subcompact fans out there who cherish and love to modify these little cars.
